New Water Storage Tank Installation: what You need to Know

New Water Storage Tank Installation

Installing your water storage tank is the next step after purchasing it. To ensure that your tank is safe, you must follow a few best practices. Consider how you plan to use the tank, as it will determine what tools you need and whether you can do it yourself. A well-planned water storage tank installation makes the entire process easier and safer. Once you know how you plan to use the water tank, installing it is easy. This is a simple procedure I found easy to understand.

1. Prepare the Tank Base

You can choose between two types of bases for your water tank. Concrete or compacted materials:

  • Concrete Base – Pour 3″ of reinforced concrete that is level, flat and larger in diameter/base than the vertical tank. Make sure that the soil is compacted properly before pouring concrete.

  • Compacted Material: Make a pad of 3″ compacted road base or crusher dust that is 24″ bigger in diameter than your water tank. The base of the tank must be completely free from any sharp objects or rocks that could damage it. The base must be compacted thoroughly and level in all directions.

This step should be done if you are replacing an old water tank with a brand new one. If you are installing a new tank for water storage, you should provide a base made of concrete or compacted materials. Also, ensure that the base’s diameter is greater than that of the tank base. It should also be flat from all sides. Proper foundation work is crucial not only for installation but also for long-term tank stabilitylearn more about the importance of inspecting tank foundations. This helps avoid spillage and structural issues in the future.

2. Install the Overflow Drainage Pipe

Your fitting could already be installed if you purchased your tank from Enduraplas (unless otherwise stated). The piping must then be connected either to the stormwater drainage or to a location that is well away from the tank and will not damage the base.

Your new tank will usually have an overflow already installed. If it’s not, it’s a very simple procedure that requires only drilling a hole to insert the gasket and sometimes a filter. To secure the fixture, you will also need to drill some screws. It will allow the water to escape and reduce the chance of foundation erosion.

3. Install Your Roof fill Pipes

Connect the pipe from the roof to the tank lid. Consult your local dealer if you plan to use your water for human consumption. You should also ensure that the filter basket is securely attached to your tank lid.

The water tank is a vital part of water collection, whether your catchment area sits on a roof or is close to the ground. Rainwater is wasted if not immediately collected and stored.

To get the best out of your water tank, you should consider its location. You should take into consideration the tank size, the space and size of your home, the pipework and plumbing structure, and the look of your home when deciding where to place your water tank.

Choosing the Right Site for Effective Water Storage Tank Installation

Size and Space Considerations

Assess the space available on your property before purchasing a water storage tank. Tanks above ground require enough space, whereas limited space might necessitate a tank underground. The right choice will maximize space while maintaining functionality.

Property Aesthetics

Some homeowners are concerned about the appearance of their water tanks. Consider placement strategies to minimize visibility, such as screen or landscaping.

Pipes and Plumbing Framework

It is important to position your water tank close to downpipes for a more efficient collection system. This may limit your placement options but it will ensure optimal storage and water flow.
